Expression of Interest - Gestalt Language Processing -Self Directed Online Learning

This is an expression of interest page, priority will be given to those employed in the public sector. Supported by funding from National HSCP Office. You will be contacted as soon as possible if your application is successful.

Registration fee: €20

Rationale:

  1. This was one of the most requested specific training courses by SLTs according to the IASLT training needs analysis (2023). In running this course we endeavour to ensure SLTs are aware and informed of this intervention and to support discourse in this area for SLTs.
  2. This course is based on research around the Natural Language Acquisition Theory (Blanc, 2012; Peters, 1983; Prizant, 1983), and specifically details supports for those who process language using the gestalt language development style.
  3. There is a systematic review of gestalt language processing interventions currently being carried out by Hemsley et al, and we look forward to its publication, to support and inform practice.

Course Information:

This is a self-paced course that will teach clinicians how to confidently identify, evaluate and work with any child who communicates with delayed echolalia (often referred to as scripting).

Provider Information: Meaningful Speech

The Meaningful Speech Community TM was set up by a speech and language therapist and is based on the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) framework (Blanc, 2012). NLA acknowledges echolalia as a stage of development. Echolalia can be a feature of communication skills in autistic children. This reframes SLT intervention from ‘teaching’ language as a skill, but instead growing language as a true, natural development.

Location: Self-directed online training

Duration: 25 hours of learning (8 hours of core learning + 17 bonus modules). Self-paced learning with unlimited lifetime access to the learning content.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  • Learn how to identify gestalt language processors
  • Learn the Natural Language Acquisition Framework (Blanc, 2012)
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the four main stages of Natural Language Acquisition
  • Develop the skills to write and assess reports and goals for gestalt language processors
  • Understand child-led therapy and maximise opportunities for spontaneous language
  • Learn from experts in the field about areas related to gestalt language processing (AAC< motor planning, sensory processing, autism).
