CHI FEDS Workshop - 1st May AND 24th September 2025

Attendees must attend both dates. (Please note places will only be confirmed once your application has been approved and payment is made) 

Participant Criteria:

This training is for:

  • Speech and language therapists working in primary care who have an active FEDS caseload in their place of work or who plan to establish or re-establish a FEDS service (e.g. there may have been a service previously which was discontinued due to an empty post).
  • SLTs who are interested in building their skills and increasing their confidence in working with infants and young children with FEDS needs in a primary care setting.

Prerequisites to attend the course:

Essential: 

1. Education:

  • Dysphagia qualification and previous theoretical training in dysphagia (note this workshop will not focus on theoretical knowledge of dysphagia and is not a qualification course)

2. Access to FEDS Cases Within Current Role:

  • Currently working in a primary care service which cares for children with FEDS needs. Be able to commit to working with at least 2 children with FEDS needs within your service between workshop date and follow-up tutorial. You will be required to video sessions for discussion at the follow-up day.

3. Named Supervisor and Service Manager Consent:

  • Have your manager’s signed consent that you will have access to and be working with a FEDS caseload during this course.
  • Have a named supervisor for FEDS cases who will provide supervision to you during your FEDS course and who will sign the attached consent form.

4. Completion of the CHI online course:  

  • 'Paediatric Aspiration and Videofluoroscopy: The evidence and the practicalities' (Link to the recording will be sent to you once you have secured your place on this course; cost included in this course)  

Desirable:

Some experience of having worked with children with FEDS needs, with or without support, would be advantageous.

This training is not suitable for SLTs who already have advanced or specialist FEDS skills.

Aims of the course:

  • To be able to apply theoretical knowledge about paediatric feeding difficulties to clinical practice.
  • To increase confidence in working with children with FEDS needs within a primary care setting.
  • To be able to manage children with FEDS needs independently (with access to appropriate supervision).
  • To recognise when an issue is beyond the therapist’s competency level and to know when to ask for help and make an onward referral as appropriate.
  • To create a peer group and a support network for SLTs working in FEDS in a primary care setting.

Please note, this course will not focus on an ARFID caseload.

Structure of the course:

The course will be interactive and will be based on video case discussions.

The workshop will include:

  • Short lectures
  • Video review and analysis
  • MDT discussion
  • Group discussion
  • Group presentations

A follow-up tutorial will be held in September. Participants will be required to present a video case study from their own practice at this tutorial.

  • Kate Fitzmaurice

Kate Fitzmaurice is a Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist currently providing SLT services in Children's Health Ireland. She has been working in the area of acute paediatric feeding & swallowing for over 12 years, in Ireland, the UK and Singapore. She is currently providing SLT services to neonates and children presenting with airway disorders. She is involved in providing the instrumental swallow assessment service in CHI which offers both videofluoroscopy clinics and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) clinics. Her training includes SOS, SOFFI and NOMAS.

  • Sharon Keogh

Sharon Keogh is a Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist currently providing SLT services in Children's Health Ireland. She has been working in the area of acute paediatric feeding & swallowing for over 18 years in CHI. She is currently providing SLT services to neonates and children presenting with neurological disorders. She is involved in provision of videofluoroscopy Swallow Study clinics. Her training includes SOS, SOS advanced and SOFFI.

  • Aileen Kelly

Aileen Kelly is an Acting Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist currently providing SLT services in Children’s Health Ireland. She has been working in as an acute therapist for over 10 years in Ireland and Singapore. She has also worked in primary care services for 2 years. She is currently providing SLT services to neonates with complex medical issues and general paediatrics in CHI. She is involved in providing the instrumental swallow assessment service in CHI which offers both videofluoroscopy clinics and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) clinics. Her training includes NOMAS and FIM FAM.

Information applicants need to include when applying:

  • Current job title, place of work
  • Brief summary of your current role
  • Is there a current FEDS service or plan to start FEDS service?
  • Brief summary of any previous experience in FEDS management
  • Confirmation from your manager that you will be able to work with at least 2 FEDS clients
    between the workshop and follow-up day.
  • Signed confirmation that you have a supervisor for the duration of this course
    (unfortunately we are unable to provide external supervision, see consent form on information page above)

If you are registering your interest for this course:

  • This course is open to IASLT members and non-members.
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure that the training course fulfils a CPD need identified as part of their own CPD planning.
  • You must commit to attending both days.
  • You must observe the cancellation policy and the IASLT terms and conditions which can be found above.

This event has a limited number of places, applicants must give a minimum 7 days notice of cancellation, by emailing kathleencpdadmin@iaslt.ie

This notice is required so that we can reallocate cancelled places.

Failure to give 7 days notice will result in:

  • The fee being non-refundable. Notification of cancellation must be sent to kathleencpdadmin@iaslt.ie and not to any other email address/ supplier.
