RECORDING of FEDS Webinar - Introducing solids and textures to infants after the neonatal unit - Recorded on the 13th June 2024

This is a recording of the event which happened on 13th June 2024.

This is an interdisciplinary event hosted by IASLT and The National Maternity Hospital. This event is open to SLTs, Occupational Therapists and Dietitians.

Course Overview and Rationale:

This webinar will be delivered by therapists (SLT, OT and Dietitian) working at the NICU in the National Maternity Hospital Holles Street.

FEDS training has consistently been identified as an area of high demand in the IASLT training needs survey in both 2022 and 2023.

Internationally, more than 1 in 10 babies are born preterm. Early, preterm infants may require nasogastric feeding during their early weeks and months. SLTs have a pivotal role as part of a multidisciplinary team in providing assessments and interventions that support these babies and their parents in safe tube weaning and establishing their FEDS skills.

Since June 2023 therapists from the NICU in the National Maternity Hospital Holles Street have been running an online class every month for parents of high risk preterm infants to support their transition to solids after being in the Neonatal unit (NICU).

The Webinar will start with a brief introduction to the NICU and the specific impact this has on families in relation to feeding.

It will help attendees understand the fears they families may have around transitioning their preterm infant to solid foods.

The team will then deliver the actual class as it is presented to parents every month.

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will learn

  1. What international guidelines are available for weaning in preterm infants
  2. When to begin weaning the preterm infant
  3. What foods to start with
  4. What skills does a preterm infant need to support successful weaning
  5. What equipment and seating do families need to think about
  6. How do babies develop biting and chewing skills
  7. What is the difference between swallowing, gagging, coughing and choking
  8. The importance of mealtimes for sensory integration, play and communication/speech and language development

They will see how a team approach to feeding can make a difference to our families and infants as part of early intervention post discharge from NICU.
