An overview of trauma informed care in Speech and Language Therapy:

  • A brief introduction to TUSLA Therapy;
  • An overview of what 'trauma informed care' means;
  • Discussion about assessment within trauma informed care;
  • How to approach therapy from a developmental trauma and disrupted attachment lens
  • Helpful approaches to use with this cohort of young people;
  • Signposting to other resources.

Learning Objectives:

Attendee's will:

  • Understand what 'trauma informed care' means;
  • Understand what developmental trauma, disrupted attachment and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are;
  • Be aware of how trauma impacts communication and recognise how a child or young person might present;
  • Have the opportunity to discuss how this understanding could impact their work in assessment and therapy;
  • A closer look at assessment and therapy including balancing the need, differential diagnosis, epistemic trust, and what to target;
  • Think about ways to adapt their work with children and young people with these backgrounds to better meet their needs;
  • Be aware of other places to get information about trauma informed care and trauma.

Speakers:

Ali Buckley, Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, Area Based Therapy Team (ABTT). Ali qualified as an SLT at the University of Essex having completed the MSc. She has since worked in the NHS, the HSE and in TUSLA since 2021.
